Arteries and veins: What's the difference?

Arteries and veins have long been defined by their functional differences: arteries carry blood flow away from the heart, while veins return blood to the heart. Arteries and veins also display significant structural differences as well. For example, arteries often have much more surrounding smooth muscle than veins.
